Preparing for a paper-free academic year

Going paper-free is not a summer-long IT project. The providers who do it well treat it as an eight-week runway with three milestones.

Weeks 1–2: pick one qualification, not a pilot committee

Choose a single qualification with frequent low-stakes assessment and a tutor who is keen. One real cohort teaches you more than a term of meetings.

Weeks 3–4: rebuild the question bank once, properly

Migrating questions is the only genuinely manual step, so do it once and version it. After that, every assessment is assembled, not authored from scratch.

Weeks 5–8: run it live, measure the delta

  • Minutes from “pens down” to collated results
  • Tutor hours spent on marking and admin per cohort
  • Print and storage cost avoided

Those three numbers are your business case for rolling out to every other course in January.
